Build the Right Foundation Before High School

Academic Planning for 7th and 8th Graders in the Bay Area

How We Support Middle Schoolers at StrivePath

Middle school is when habits stick. The course choices, study skills, and interests students build now shape what high school and college look like. Most families wait until junior or senior year to think about college prep. By then, some of the most important decisions have already been made.

StrivePath works with 7th- and 8th-graders on academic planning and college-prep foundations that make everything easier later. We help students choose the right courses, develop real study habits, and start exploring their interests before the pressure of high school sets in. Every student works one-on-one with the same counselor throughout, so the plan stays consistent as they grow.

How It Works

Step 1

Assess

We take time to get to know your student's goals, grade level, and timeline. This gives us a clear starting point before we do anything else.

Step 2

Plan

We build a clear academic and college roadmap that works for your student. No two students are the same, so no two plans look alike.

Step 3

Guide

Our team supports your family at every stage of the process. We stay with your student from middle school all the way through senior year.

What We Work On With Your Student

Academic Planning and Course Selection

The classes a student takes in 7th and 8th grade shape what they can access in high school. We help students and families make course choices that align with long-term goals, not just what seems manageable right now.

What's included:

  • Course selection aligned with high school and college goals
  • High school readiness planning and track selection
  • Summer academic program and camp recommendations
  • Identifying gaps early and building a plan around them

Study Skills and Classroom Strategies

Strong grades are not just about being smart. They come from knowing how to manage time, stay organized, and study effectively. We build these habits in middle school before the stakes get higher.

What's included:

  • Time management and prioritization techniques
  • Study habits and note-taking strategies
  • SMART goal setting and accountability check-ins
  • Preparing for the academic pace of high school

Career and Interest Exploration

Middle school is the best time to start exploring what a student actually enjoys, before they have to commit to a direction. We use structured activities to help students connect interests to future opportunities.

What's included:

  • Interest and values assessments
  • Career exploration activities and exercises
  • Extracurricular and volunteer activity guidance
  • Connecting interests to course choices and high school planning

Personal Development

Students who understand themselves make better decisions under pressure. We work on the skills that show up in high school, on college applications, and long after.

What's included:

  • Values and decision-making exercises
  • Resilience and stress management strategies
  • Building positive relationships with teachers and peers
  • Self-advocacy and communication skills

Introduction to College Financial Planning

College costs are not something families should figure out last minute. We introduce the basics early so there are no surprises when the time actually comes.

What's included:

  • Overview of how college financial planning works
  • Introduction to the Net Price Calculator
  • Early saving strategies and tips for families
  • Scholarship awareness and timeline planning

Thank you, StrivePath! As a mom navigating our first college process, I can’t say enough about Saumya—she was patient, supportive, reassuring, and kind from start to finish. She built a realistic summer plan for my son that helped us complete the college research and essay work early, so when October 1 arrived, our applications were already submitted. The organization and calm she brought to the process were a huge relief. She reassured my son that he would have many options and celebrated each college admittance with him. We felt guided every step of the way. Get ready for Kid #2!

 FAQs

Get answers to the top questions about our academic and college planning services.

  • Is 7th grade really not too early to start?

Not at all. The course choices and habits students build in 7th and 8th grade directly affect their high school transcript. Starting early means more options, not more pressure. We keep the process age-appropriate and focused on what actually matters at this stage.

  • How is this different from what the school counselor does?

School counselors manage large student loads and focus primarily on graduation requirements and well-being. We work one-on-one with your student on a long-term academic plan built specifically around their goals, strengths, and college direction.

  • Is this the same as tutoring?

No. We focus on strategy, habits, and long-term planning rather than subject-specific help. If your student needs tutoring in a particular subject, we can point you to the right resources while we handle the bigger picture.

  • What if my student has no idea what they want to do yet?

That is exactly why starting in middle school makes sense. We use structured activities to help students figure out what genuinely interests them before they have to commit to anything. Not knowing is a fine place to start.

  • Will this help with choosing the right high school?

Yes. We help families think through high school options, including special programs, honors tracks, and course prerequisites that matter later. This is one of the most valuable things we work on with 8th graders.

  • How often does my student meet with their counselor?

Session frequency depends on your student's grade level and what we are working on together. We find a rhythm that fits your family's schedule and keeps things moving without feeling like another obligation.

  • Do you work with middle schoolers in my area?

Yes. We work with families both in person and remotely throughout the Bay Area. We have dedicated pages for middle school families in Fremont, Oakland, Mountain View, Cupertino, San Ramon, Walnut Creek, San Mateo, Moraga, and Mill Valley. If your city is not on the list, reach out and we can talk through options.
